As it was... and as it is now.

The Saxons came to Chulmleigh in about 815 A.D, and created a settlement on a clearing in the forest high up above the Little Dart and Taw Valleys.  They chose this site because it was easy to defend and well protected from the weather.  It was then a peaceful place set apart from the rest of the world, and today, this description still holds true.  The countryside around our town has been designated an "area of tranquillity".  This means that our roads and lanes are largely free from smelly traffic; the air is crystal clear; and the starry night sky really has to be seen to be believed!
Our house was built in about 1520 and is reputed to be the most ancient building in Chulmleigh.  It belonged originally to generations of wool merchants who gave their wealth to the building of our magnificent parish church of St. Mary Magdalene.  We welcome you, our guests, from near and far, into our beautiful house: our aim is to make you feel totally at home, whether you stay for many days or just a short break.  We are sure that you will join the ever-increasing number of guests who return to visit us time and again. Drawing of Courtyard
The Old Bakehouse occupies two buildings surrounding a peaceful and colourful courtyard garden.  We provide three charming and well equipped bedrooms, one double and two twin-bedded, including ensuite showers, colour TV with DVD player, radios and hospitality trays.  A guest telephone and laundry/drying facilities are also provided.  There is a guest sitting room with a log burner for the cooler weather, well supplied with books, magazines and games.  There is also a small library of DVDs for guests’ entertainment.
Excellent food is an important part of any stay and we believe in preparing breakfasts to a high standard.  The source of our raw materials is very important to us and we use mainly locally produced meats, cheeses, eggs and fish.  Our bread is baked 'in-house'.  We are also able to cater for special diets by prior arrangement.

We welcome children over 11 years old.  However, we regret we cannot take pets.  Our house is smoke free throughout.
